New Mogwai – “The Sun Smells Too Loud”

A lot has been reported, of course, on the victorious track listing for their forthcoming release The Hawk is Howling, featuring most excellent flea market-worthy artwork. Now, a new track has been released and is available for sampling with the little clicky below the photo.  Go visit Matador in September to pick up the album, or support local business and visit your neighborhood jam purveyor.

This photo was stealthily captured by me while they sound checked at The Dame supporting Mr. Beast. Pay usually sucks when working at a music venue, but perks like a personalized concert make up for it. Super, super nice dudes, and I have quite a story about Mogwai that I may share in the near future. As ol’ Wesley Willis would say, Barry “likes to rock – he is a rocking machine.”

Also, if Girl Talk or the Hood Internet ever reads this, here’s a mash-up idea: “The Sun Smells Like Teen Street Spirit.” Go!

Decibel Tolls Mailbag: 7.10.08

“In the interest of social justice, I’m going to subject your music blog to the same rigorous standards that I subject others, Mikey, and refuse to read it regularly until Enuff Z’nuff has been mentioned on at least two non-consecutive occasions.” – Tom ’80s

Oh Tom, no worries. Though Enuff Z’nuff falls outside the “scope” of the site, I always make exceptions for Z’nuff, as they have done for me in the past (if you know what I mean, and I know you do). Evidently I also make exceptions for Night Ranger.

This counts as post one. Most triumphant.

New Releases: Dungen and Black Moth Super Rainbow

Lulz. As reported in my previous post, Darker My Love’s forthcoming album is titled 2, and now Dungen just announced their forthcoming jam hive, out sometime in October. And wouldn’t you know that it’s titled 4. Psych dudes have been watching Sesame Street as of late and are really stoked about numbers. Pitchfork released the track listing yesterday, but I won’t list it here since – I dunno, does it mean anything to you? I get confused at IKEA. I had the privilege of seeing Dungen in New York during CMJ ‘05, and they are some of the most talented musicians I’ve ever witnessed. Where they lacked in a lot of visuals, they made up for in pure prowess – they’re the type of dudes who make you feel bad about your skill level if you play an instrument. Check out Dungen’s website to get pre-order info and to peep their really awesome hair.

New Releases: Dungen and Black Moth Super Rainbow

Love Black Moth Super Rainbow. They’ve been super busy as of late, from rereleasing all of their back catalogue (including Start a People, my favorite record of last year that wasn’t realy released last year), to supporting the Flaming Lips, to their Zodiac Girls release. And now they have a new rarities collection due for September called Drippers. Prolific. And you know, I think this Sesame Street image matches the feel of BMSR as well, so we’ll let it hang.

Bands I love are touring with a band I don’t like: Darker My Love and A Place to Bury Strangers

It should be noted that I don’t hate the Dandy Warhols. Not in the least. I would just choose to not listen to them, if given the choice, and seeing as I often frequent coffee shops, I’m never given the choice. Regardless, I don’t fervently dislike them, but Dig did made me hate Courtney Taylor and I think their music is rather borecore. I never understood why Anton Newcombe tried to start a rivalry between his band and theirs, considering that the Brian Jonestown Massacre is leaps and bounds better. It’s like picking on a handicapped kid or somethin’.

So now to the point – one very excellent band and one very good band will be opening for the Dandys this fall. The first, Darker My Love, will provide the opening white noise squall throughout the fall to promote their upcoming album, in a Zepplinesque fashion, 2. They’re playing a few west coast dates starting next week to premiere the jam hive, then go out on the road and, hopefully, steal Courtney’s drugs when he’s not looking. Aces. 2 drops like Fat Man and Little Boy on August 5.

Brookyln’s A Place to Bury Strangers will be opening the two SoCal dates: Oct 1 in San Diego at Belly Up, and Oct 3 in LA at the Wiltern Theater. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them at the Empty Bottle here in Chicago on Sept 21 (that’s the fall equinox, ya’ll) because, ya know, I’ve never seen the Jesus and Mary Chain live. And if I did see them live, I’d want them to do a “Don’t Look Back” performance of Psychocandy. Since that won’t happen, A Place to Bury Strangers fills that void in my black heart. Supposedly they’re the loudest band around these days, but I’ll believe that when I see it. Mogwai, Hair Police, and Dalek are pretty loud, and all have done permanent damage to my hearing. But if A Place to Bury Strangers can hang in that company, they will conquer live. And upset every Dandy fan in the audience.

The Free Design – “Kije’s Ouija”

freedesign The Free Design - Kijes Ouija

As it is summer, I’ll be posting a lot of Free Design MP3s. The Free Design is such an odd group, insofar as the group’s music took on a whimsical, frolicking, sweeping sunshine pop sound whilst the lyrics leaned more toward, uh, metal. Take “Kije’s Ouija,” a narrative about a dude with a ouija board who talks at first of angels, then of the apocalypse in the next stanza.

Now many more like this the angel will send, but you could do yourself much worse /
Just push a couple buttons, let your favorite bombs completely cover over the earth /
Now the angel’s curse has come and gone, but everyone knew that

That’s heavy. The Free Design is coming back in a big way, everything from Light in the Attic’s Redesigned series that dropped not too long ago, to the increasing number of people on Last.fm rockin’ to Kites Are Fun, to a general new excitement toward the group that rivals their late ’60s heyday. For a group who wrote a song about how to make a huge hit yet ironically couldn’t do it themselves (their single “2002 – A Hit Song”), it’s about time for the Free Design’s time, regardless if it’s 40 years too late. Due to revived interest, the Free Design is back together and, hopefully, will be playing some shows soon.

Get ready to feel good. Seriously, if you want to solve problems, listen to the Free Design. No foolin’.

Zombies on the March!

zombies Zombies on the March!

Hmmm… can I make it to Milwaukee tonight, and in two hours? Well if you’ve planned better than I, you can catch Colin Bluntstone and company playing some pretty decent rooms (Irving Plaza in NYC) and some relatively questionable rooms (Trump Marina Casino in Atlantic City? C’mon guys, that’s some Boz Scaggs shit!). And if you’re one of the lucky ones who catch them in New York, make sure to set up shop early for The Blues Magoos, a band I had no idea was still around but was always a Nuggets highlight for me.

The Zombies played the music club I used to work at before I actually starting working there roughly four years ago (sadly I missed it), but word has it that it was one of the most exciting, best sounding performances ever to hit that stage – even 40 years after the band’s prime. Maybe I should be making this aforementioned drive.

So yeah, the Zombies are one of the greatest of all time, without a doubt. Odyssey and Oracle rules my, and your, being. And just look at that photo! Dapper gentlemen. So go see them! Czech the dates:

07-05 Milwaukee, WI – Summerfest
07-06 Saint Paul, MN – Taste of Minnesota
07-09 Lansing, MI – Common Ground Festival
07-10 Uncasville, CT – Mohegan Sun Casino
07-11 New York, NY – Irving Plaza
07-12 Atlantic City, NJ – Trump Marina Casino
07-13 Westhampton Beach, NY – PAC
07-15 Alexandria, VA – The Birchmere
07-17 Anaheim, CA – The Grove
07-18 Las Vegas, NV – The Cannery Casino
07-19 Agoura Hills, CA – The Canyon Club
07-20 San Francisco, CA – Regency Center

Deerhunter – “These Hands”

deerhunter Deerhunter - These Hands

This leaked rather quickly. Microcastle doesn’t come out until October, but you can catch some of the tracks floating around the Internet if you act fast. You can also just enjoy the stream on Deerhunter’s MySpace. I’m sad they changed their profile around… right before Cryptograms came out, they posted all the bad press they’ve received up to that point on their “about me” section, which I thought was decidedly excellent.

Though I have mixed feelings about some of the songs, “These Hands” (not to be confused with The Guess Who’s equally righteous “These Eyes”) is everything you would ever want to hear on a Kranky release. LOTS OF TREMOLO, and in the universe that the Decibel Tolls occupies, tremolo is the key to success. It seems Deerhunter might be moving away, slightly, from the deluge of noise found on Cryptograms and Flourescent Grey, toning down the wigouts and bringing the vocals up to the front. However, Microcastle, thus far, still seems to preserve just enough of their renowned spaciness to keep things interstellar. The piano and drone coda of “These Hands” provokes the feeling of an excellent Boards of Canada segue or any given Ghost Box artist.

Though I’m totally stoked to see groups like Deerhunter, Animal Collective, and the like get their dues, I still find it peculiar that these relatively odd groups are getting so popular. Perhaps that’s the power of Pitchfork? Of course, I’m very glad that more people are listening to dronerific jams like Deerhunter, and would rather have our collective tastes pushed toward that end of the spectrum than toward borecore artists like Vampire Weekend. Maybe that’s just me. The world needs to be a stranger place, and Deerhunter is helping to make that happen.

Come see Bradford Cox in a dress at one of these fine shows. They’re supporting Nine Inch Nails for most of these dates, which is totally weird:

The United States of America – “The American Metaphysical Circus” and “Heresy”

On this holiday celebrating a rather goofy nation, it seemed poignant to post about one of my all-time favorite artists, also somewhat goofy, who happened to adopt a most festive and patriotic namesake – The United States of America.

usa The United States of America - The American Metaphysical Circus and Heresy

I’m still blown away every time I consider that this album, their one and only eponymous record, was recorded in 1967!

The United States of America was so far ahead of its time that it sounds futuristic even today. “The American Metaphysical Circus” provides a starting point for the marriage of psych pop with soaring melodic choruses, noise flourishes, and electronic structures adopted later by groups like Broadcast, Need New Body, early Stereolab, et al. Also make note of wonderfully drugged out lyrics: “and the price is right, the cost of one admission is your mind.” Word. “Heresy” is a better and more interesting outtake of “Coming Down” off the original release, and almost evokes a very distinct baroque flavor that, despite its major key tendencies, feels somewhat ominous. Hands down one of the most underrated artists of the ’60s.

Pink Floyd – “Nightmare/Cymbaline”

A buddy of mine gave me a copy of some very insane, very amazing early Pink Floyd BBC bootlegs – all recorded from 1968 to 1970. Half of the songs feature Syd Barrett and his jam cannon before his exit in late 1968, and the second half still reels from Syd’s visionary influence. Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets are, undoubtedly, the best of the Floyd. Sorry, Dark Side, The Wall… meh. Psych records were never meant to prominently feature sax solos and smooth R&B grooves.

pinkfloyd Pink Floyd - Nightmare/Cymbaline

After some heavy research, I figured out that this bootleg is called “The Scarecrow’s Dream” and features a number of songs that were not widely released or recognized, and all recorded during that vital, creative time between Piper and Secrets. Behold “Nightmare,” which later became “Cymbaline,” on Soundtrack From the Film More (the first song ever performed live with the Azimuth Coordinator). This sonic cathedral of a jam is very different than anything heard on their debut or post-Syd sophomore album. The quality isn’t the best, but considering that these songs were passed from person to person by analog tape only, and made it here in 2008 is still quite a feat.

This monumental spookfest is heeeaavvvyyyyy…
