Deerhunter Tours Some More

deerhunter Deerhunter Tours Some More

Deerhunter just released some more non-NIN shows coming up this fall. Bradford Cox is buying some new dresses for the occasion, too! By the way, BC has my heart, because he understands something that I understand, but very few others do. Quoted in Analogue Mag: “I’ve pretty much given up on indie rock. I hate indie rock. I never listen to it anymore. Because indie rock to me is safe. Like college rock in the 80s. It has a lot to do with economic oppression. It has a lot to do with rich kids. When I think of indie rock recently I think of sort of bands whose names I won’t mention appropriating African music.” Thank you, Brad. Thank you, Deerhunter. The Verve is back? Where was I?

verve The Verve is back? Where was I?

I’m a little late on this one, but fucking hell, The Verve is dropping a new record in two weeks! Shit! I would run outside naked and do my happy prance, but it’s Orange Alert right now and I’m scared. The album is called Fourth, because as you know, psych rock and shoegaze dudes just can’t do any better these days (Darker My Love’s new album is 2, Dungen’s forthcoming is called 4, and the next Brian Jonestown record will be Dos Equis). Regardless of the moniker, this dystopian world we live in, in which dongcore bands like the Ting Tings are just tres awesome, needs a group like the Verve to be resurrected a la the Phoenix to plow some motherfuckers over with Twin Reverb Combos. You can pre-order it now. Continue reading ‘The Verve is back? Where was I?’

Brightblack Morning Light’s Still Interstellar

brightblack Brightblack Morning Lights Still Interstellar

Feathers, rosaries, and teal colored water. Should be a good time, especially on LSD. Brightblack Morning Light’s latest, Motion to Rejoin, takes up where the self-titled record left off, and this time, was recorded with solar power. Brightgreen Morning Light. Matador just announced today that the album drops September 23, the same day as Mogwai’s new record, so the label will be receive approximately $26 of my money on that day. Of course, you can pre-order it now. Continue reading ‘Brightblack Morning Light’s Still Interstellar’

New Brian Eno and David Byrne – “Strange Overtones”

db_be New Brian Eno and David Byrne - Strange Overtones

The expansive 1981 Brian Eno + David Byrne LP My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was groundbreaking to the Nth degree, and it’s undoubtedly my favorite release from either gentleman. To think that this unabashedly bizarre album was laid to tape in the middle of Eno’s ambient explorations and right before the ever-popular Remain in Light (all recorded in ’70s no less) is pretty mind-blowing. In many ways, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts made the world safe for artists like Boards of Canada and Godspeed You Black Emperor to utilize strange field recordings over vocals. And it looks like the 2006 rerelease treatment for My Life in the Bush of Ghosts has renewed enough interest for a follow-up collaboration effort. Everything That Happens will be released as a digital download on August 18 from the official site. Throw it on and have the most fucked-up dance party you’ve ever witnessed. Oneida – “Preteen Weaponry Part 1″

Oneida’s latest, Preteen Weaponry, drops today on the pretty much flawless Jagjaguwar label. Preteen Weaponry is part of a sprawling multi-album project dubbed “Thank Your Parents.” What Oneida’s vision exactly is remains rather mysterious, but will rule nonetheless. Preteen Weaponry features three movements, and is the first record in the series. Oneida is always reliably prolific, and most certainly always epic. Though the new jams don’t deviate far from Each One Teach One’s first towering disc, you can’t complain too much with consistent output. Oneida is the greatest non-kraut kraut rock band ever.

The 88Boadrums’ 88 Drummers

boredoms The 88Boadrums 88 Drummers
As reported not too long ago
, Boredoms are celebrating their favorite holiday – the incidental triple digit date – with a bicoastal 88 drummer performance led by Eye. Each performance will start at 8:08 P.M. (local time) on August 8th. The prestigious list of drummers includes members of Animal Collective, Dead Meadow, Entrance, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Crystal Antlers, Psychic Ills, Sic Alps, Beachwood Sparks, and many more Decibel Tolls-relevant artists. I can’t make it out to either date (I live in flyover country, you see), nor can I afford the cost of airfare, so if anyone is going please take photos and I’ll credit you and relish you with props if you send some to me! Thanks P4K for the news update! Continue reading ‘The 88Boadrums’ 88 Drummers’

What’s More Psychedelic Than Animatronic Animals?

Aaron Fechter has an awesome job. Fechter was one of the original engineers/designers of Rock-afire Explosion, designed by Creative Engineering, Inc. These were the folks responsible for those mighty, mechanical, probably bionic animatronic stage animals that performed for such fine dinner theater establishments as Chuck-E-Cheese and Showbiz Pizza. I was all about Showbiz. Actually, I still am. Continue reading ‘What’s More Psychedelic Than Animatronic Animals?’

Pet Ghost Project – “Celebrate Youth (Over and Over Again)”

PGP Pet Ghost Project - Celebrate Youth (Over and Over Again)

The Pet Ghost Project, I hope, is going to make some headway in Brooklyn (tough market, especially in these economically trying times), because they, thankfully, don’t sound like so much of the music coming out of that part of the world. Their indescribable, shapeshifting sound is quite admirable. Writing quality, lush post rock-ish complex pop, the Pet Ghost Project offers dynamic, sharply changing moods on each of their offerings from Cheer Up – It’s Raining. Justin from the Pet Ghost Project sent me a couple of cuts last week, and I was particularly impressed with “Celebrate Youth (Over and Over Again).” Continue reading ‘Pet Ghost Project – “Celebrate Youth (Over and Over Again)”’

Totally Not Going to Lollapalooza

Lolla Totally Not Going to Lollapalooza

All I’m going to see of Lollapalooza this year is this pretty nifty aerial view from the 68th floor of the Aon Center (click the above photo for high res action), where I work. And that suits me just fine. In contrast to how right Pitchfork got their music festival this year, Lollapalooza offers too lackluster of a lineup for too high of a price. Plus, in contrast to Pitchfork’s Union Park, which features plenty of shade when you need it, Grant Park has, like, no shade. Enjoy the high of 89 on Saturday. The nice, cool Lake Michigan breeze mysteriously vanishes when it gets over 85 F. Continue reading ‘Totally Not Going to Lollapalooza’
