These Swedish dudes have flown so low under the radar for so long, The Radio Dept. looked practically shell-shocked at the thick and excitable audience crowding in front of the Blue Stage Saturday evening. To wit, their shyness was a bit palpable (but also endearing). What they lacked in stage presence, however, The Radio Dept. made up for multi-fold with a sonically ornate live performance. Serendipitously, the glistening rays of the setting sun peaking behind the stage offered a pretty on-point visual reference for their achingly beautiful, gentle, aerodynamic dream pop grooves – sounds which are still new to many American ears despite Pitchfork’s support. And this should go without saying – it’s rather cathartic hearing the world’s most delicately scathing and celestial government protest song, “The New Improved Hypocrisy,” blasting over a few thousand watts of power. They hide their ferocity well.
