Brainwashing, Misanthropy, and Society: an Analysis of Boards of Canada’s Geogaddi

boardsofcanada Brainwashing, Misanthropy, and Society: an Analysis of Boards of Canadas Geogaddi

Recently, I opened a Tumblr account (kenny-bloggins.tumblr.com if’n yownta follow me) to post photos, graphic design work, and various sharable media. Whilst dickin’ around late last night, I tried to find an old website of mine hosted on the now-outdated University of Kentucky student server, since it had a lot of rad photographs of mine to upload on my new Tumblr page. Said website also featured a lot of various writing I had done during my freshman year in college, including an analytical piece I wrote for one of my English classes. I decided to keyword this paper to try to locate the old website. To my astonishment, I found that a number of different people – on websites, in other college papers, and even on Wikipedia – had cited this piece I wrote back in 2003 called Brainwashing, Misanthropy, and Society: an Analysis of Boards of Canada’s Geogaddi.

I wanted to publish this piece on the blog to share with you all, as well as to give the piece a more official source. You see, concerning the latter point, the paper is attributed to my nickname when I was 18, the name that appears on the title of the website – Mikey P Diddy. Yeah, that’s rather embarrassing. And since I wrote it when I was 18, the writing is certainly a very different style than how I write now. Evidently, I was a rather pretentious tool at that age that was too good to use phrases such as, I dunno, “dickin’ around” (again, note that I was evidently a pretentious tool known to his bros as Mikey P Diddy… Christ, that’s downright horrible).

Unfortunately, I don’t have the works cited page available. Roughly half the observations were mine, and half were various interpretations found in discussions on the old boardsofcanada.com message board. Otherwise, the good ol’ Encyclopedia Britannica was utilized. Again, this is a college paper, so I don’t expect a lot of folks to be terribly intrigued. But if you are, the full text and relevant Boards of Canada MP3s (your reward for reading, I suppose) are here for your perusal after the jump.

Help Decide Warp’s 20th Anniversary Tracklisting!

Warp20350 Help Decide Warps 20th Anniversary Tracklisting!

I was raised on Warp. During my very first job at a hole in the wall lawn & garden shop my boss used to put on the Richard D James Album whenever it was a slow day (i.e. every day except Arbor Day). But all my nostalgia aside, there is no other label that has promoted more discussion, mystique, or innovation to the world of electronic music than these guys right here, and after going 20 years strong, it’s time to fucking celebrate.

Here’s how they’re rolling it out. Right now, instead of reading this, you could be helping to decide the track listing for the Best of Warp compilation! This 20-song cd will have 10 tracks chosen by co-founder Steve Beckett, and the rest are up to us. Each person can vote up to 50 times (but only once for each track) from now until May 8th. My first vote just went to Squarepusher’s “Iambic 9 Poetry”.

What would a birthday bash be without some crazy guest appearances? Kicking off in Paris on May 8th will be a limited tour with a drool-worthy lineup featuring: Aphex Twin, arriving either by tank or submarine depending on location, and sharing the stage with him is wonderkid Tim Hecker, also !!! (chk chk chk), Pivot, Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, and that’s only who they’ve revealed so far (I’m lookin’ at you, Boards of Canada). Most of the dates are in the UK, but the crew will make one stop state-side in New York on July 20th.

Windowlicker. What a creep! Read more here.]

Now, that’s already enough excitement for us faint of heart, but it doesn’t stop there. This autumn, Warp will also be releasing a collection of “new and unreleased tracks from the majority of the current Warp roster, as well as some of the finest artists from our history.” Quantities are said to be “extremely limited” so stay tuned in for details if you wanna beat me to it. Viva la Warp!

[Editor's Note: Fuckin' love Warp, dude. I just voted for Broadcast "America's Boy", Seefeel "Spangle," Aphex Twin "To Cure a Weakling Child" and Two Lone Swordsmen "Punches and Knives," four incredibly sick songs that I've included below for your consideration. Vote for 'em! If it ain't Warp, it ain't worth a shit!]

MP3 :::
Squarepusher – Iambic 9 Poetry
Boards of Canada – Drive Left Side
Broadcast – America’s Boy
Two Lone Swordsmen – Punches and Knives
Seefeel – Spangle

Happy Birthday, Sputnik!

ssm4 Happy Birthday, Sputnik!

Our favorite round, beachball-sized, constantly beeping friend turns 51 today. Or would’ve turned 51 today had he not burned up a bit in the Earth’s atmosphere. I like to spend my Tuesday evenings with PBS’ science program Nova, and this week’s installment covered all that you probably didn’t know about the Sputnik program and the advent of the Space Race… Continue reading ‘Happy Birthday, Sputnik!’

Odd Nosdam Does Boards of Canada Right

Boards of Canada are sacred territory for me. In fact, I may subject you sometime to this college thesis I wrote about Geogaddi when I was a freshman. Normal people don’t think this hard about ambient, immovable analog synth launches, so BoC is serious business. Only one dude can do them right, and that’s the elder statesman of thick, sprawling, storm inducing psych-hop, Odd Nosdam.

Pretty Swell Explode, Odd Nosdam’s latest 2-disc release, compiles all of his fairly recent remixes and collaborations, including this track from BoC’s Trans Canada Highway. I need to sling some of Odd’s excellent, gorgeous mountain-moving “Untitled Three” collaborations with Flying Saucer Attack’s Jessica Bailiff up here soon (one of which can be found on Pretty Swell Explode), but for the time being, Odd Nosdam showcases his genius in this gigantic, barely recognizable interpretation of “Dayvan Cowboy.” Despite this, I still think of the Kittinger Fall, as featured in the original music video, when I hear it. Odd Nosdam kinda sounds like falling from the edge of the atmosphere, in a way. The second movement is not for wimps, so proceed with caution.
