I am completely in love, perhaps an agape love, with the new song Broadcast has been ending all their shows with on the current tour. You know the one I’m talking about… the one with Trish Keenan shredding on a customized electric dulcimer. Like, total “My Dear Companion” meets “Astronomy Domine” meets “Autobahn” meets “Fight For Your Right (To Party)” action. Ya know, the krautrock hoedown. With the help of Pretty Creatures‘ warm analog tape bootleg of the show (you can download it here), I grabbed the finale, cleaned it up a bit (with just a couple of compressors, filters, and a peak limiter – no manipulation of the actual sound), and am providing it below for maximum damage (you can grab the cleaned-up-a-bit version here). No one knows the actual name of this song yet, so I’mma call it “Dulcimer Jam.” Because it features an amplified dulcimer. And it’s a jam.

Told ya the bootlegs would come fast. Yesterday’s Atlas Sound ATP set is provided below. Lots of new stuff, lots of jammage, lots of Bradford gabbin’ and trying to fix his shit on stage. Enjoy.

Also, my boi Nathaniel from IGIF is at All Tomorrows Parties NY right now (bastard) and he’s reporting that B Cox told the crowd later that night during the Deerhunter set that yesterday’s show will be the last for the group “in quite a while.” This might be disconcerting if you don’t consider the fact that “quite a while” in Deerhunter years probably means “a couple of months.” I’m sure attention will turn to Atlas Sound, Lotus Plaza, and whatever other side projects the dudes are instituting in the interim. Fear not (hopefully).

Logos is still set to come out on October 20, which will be a super Tuesday (new Tickley Feather and Do Make Say Think also drop that day), courtesy of muhfuckin’ Kranky. Considering how much free shit Bradford gives you, buy it when it’s out. Seriously, guys.

I recently stumbled upon this impeccable DAT soundboard-quality bootleg of a November 1994 performance by Ride, though bootleg may not be the right word. This recording often appears on the band discographies, but Ride never gave permission for an “official release.” Hence, before the mighty intarwebz, Live Light was available only in Japan.

Particularly special about this recording is that, given the date, this was probably the last document of the original Ride in their prime. Carnival of Light, released earlier that year, was Ride’s White Album. Chief songwriters Andy Bell and Mark Gardener were majorly bummed on each other, creating a huge rift in continuity on Light. Bell, as you may know, went on to join Oasis after the group’s demise in early ‘96. Talk about a rebound date.

Live Light was taped in either Lyon or Nancy, France according to the Ride Gigography. The album’s liner notes don’t specify. Either way, it is absolutely necessary for any shoegaze fan to have this swan song document of the genre’s premiere artist. Hence, I’m offering it at the link below. It’s the CD version of the bootleg. There was a light blue 2LP version as well that featured two songs not available on the disc (“Twisterella” and “Drive Blind,” the latter I’d love to hear). If anyone has those jams, holla at ya boi Bloggins here.

The mighty WFMU brings the goods once again, archiving a soundboard quality recording of Oneida’s insane performance at last month’s Primavera Sound Festival (known for its beautiful ambience along the Spanish Mediterranean and the location where Wavves lost his shit but I totally don’t blame him for it). The recording includes an Acid Mothers Temple-esque, undeniably evil, kaleidoscopic, 43-minute brain busting rendition of “Each One Teach One.” It’s fucking ridiculous and delightfully unnecessary. I feel stoned listening to this right now. Love this band.

Unfortunately, the kraut punk collective opted to not play any new material from the forthcoming Rated O. But who gives a shit – it’s Oneida, and it’ll be good. Nevertheless, the group will be celebrating its July 7th release with a couple of stateside dates, and a couple of European ones, too. The domestic rockshows will feature some big ballaz – Amps For Christ, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Wooden Shjips, and more:

Gotta shout out to Evan at Swan Fungus again for locating more difficult-to-find holy relics. Today, it’s a Dead Meadow bootleg, sometimes referred to as a Live on WFMU recording, though Evan points out that it’s actually a somewhat lost Peel Session.

Dead Meadow releases some of the highest caliber Hawkwind-esque mind-melters today. Of course, in the studio, you can saturate each track with reverb and panning techniques to make anything sound pretty good. This is where Dead Meadow prove themselves as an awesome band – they absolutely smoke live. “Drifting Down Streams” is cultish.

Rumor has it, though, that if you book them at your event or club, you have to clean up a lot of paraphenelia. This is just what I hear. Anyway, you can, for a limited time, snag the whole recording at Evan’s diggs, so hop to it.

Interestingly enough, I had the pleasure of seeing both Battles and Don Caballero play within a few months of each other last year at the ol’ music venue I used to help book and promote. This is significant as guitarist Ian Williams (pictured above, courtesy of Radio Free Chicago) brought his non-soloing fingertap riffage to Don Cab for years before Battles, and conventional lore suggests that the disbanding of the original Don Caballero lineup was not pretty. So the venue’s other talent buyer and I joked that Battles might have been supremely bummed if they knew we were playing the field with two of our favorite math rockers. If they read this blog, I guess they know now. Me and my big mouth.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen Battles yet, you can get a quick sample of their live show with the recently released (albeit on the other side of the world) EP Lives.

I love Battles, because I love prog rock. People who pan prog rock but also like Battles need to reexamine their opinions on music. Battles are as close to prog as they are to the often-dropped math rock tag (sans some of the corny theatrics, of course). This was reaffirmed for me during their performance with Caribou I saw at the Metro in Chicago last November. They widen the sonic space even more live, replacing the glitchiness of Mirrored with cascading swells of thick, aquatic, warm, analog astral plane journeys. They are compositionally tight and otherworldly live, just like the best proggers were. Not only do Battles sound like the music that would be pipped into the antennae of the Martian army in Vonnegut’s Sirens of Titan, but they dress the part of an extraterrestrial army by sporting nothing but the most immaculately ironed, matching, crisp white collar shirts. That, combined with the bizarre six-foot cymbal ex-Helmet drummer John Stainer crushes and Tyondai Braxton’s “throw your hands in the air” dance he does behind mountains of samplers, creates a visually strange and captivating show without reliance on video or light visuals.

Battles Lives features a taste of what you can expect of the group live. So far, Lives is only available in Japan and is not economically priced. I’m sure it will see domestic release sometime in the not-so-distant future, so in the meantime, enjoy a couple of my favorites from the EP to tide you over. I’m not posting the whole Lives EP though, because this blog is for sampling, remember. Keepin’ it real, keepin’ it legal.

Good gawd, ya’ll. The bootlegs keep coming in, but this time from the official source. WFMU just posted their archive of Growing’s performance at the absolutely immaculate All Tomorrow’s Parties. The attractive photo above is also from your menacing friends at Beware of Blog.I’m super bummed that I missed not one, but two festivals that were curated to my specific taste in music – as in, I would be stoked to see any given group on the festival roster. The other festival I speak of was Terrastock 7 in Louisville. Sure, ATP would’ve been a hike from Chicago (not to mention additional investment of time and money into exterminating bedbugs from my luggage due to an alleged infestation at Kutschers), but Louisville is just five hours and some change due south on I-65. I had no excuse other than pure dumbassery.

Anyway, Growing slays, and I hope they frightened each and every Hot Chip dork with their opening sets this month.
