Dream Pop Theater with Allegories and The Asteroid #4

asteroid4 Dream Pop Theater with Allegories and The Asteroid #4

If I had a bunch of money, like, if me and Jim Kramer went into a hedge fund and it went ballistic or somethin’, I would buy a lot of stuff. I’m materialistic. Having shit is aces. I would get a Telecaster, a Sea-Doo jet ski, a sitar, a shit-ton of Wii games, and an anti-gravity tank. The latter would be the most important and most difficult to obtain, as it would be tough fitting an anti-gravity tank in a city apartment – so that item would be coupled with a storage space west of the city somewhere. I would invite friends over to the anti-gravity tank, which I would dub La Nave Espacial. It would act as the perfect gathering place for birthdays, anniversaries, bar mitzvahs, retirement parties, weddings, funerals, et al. It would also serve as a great complement to both Allegories‘ and Asteroid #4’s latest jam canons.

Philadelphia’s The Asteroid #4, currently part of Anton “They Broke My Fucking Sitar” Newcombe’s Committee to Keep Music Evil collective and possibly brahs with Bardo Pond, are preparing to drop off some serious hazetrips in These Flowers of Ours, out on the 16th of this month. Compared to the hit-or-miss An Amazing Dream, the new jam hive sounds like it’s shaping up to be really good. Trading in the mid-tempo bubblegum hooks that NPR affiliates ape over for some real sinister textures, soaring harmonies, and amped-up baroque pop flavors, The Asteroid #4 is properly channeling the best of classic shoegaze. The title track is gorgeous, lush, and bombastic, like Mayo Thompson meets Van Dyke Parks, or what Ride’s Carnival of Light would’ve sounded like if Andy Bell still gave a care or the Stone Roses’ Second Coming if they 86ed the bad whiteboy blues juju. The Verve needs to take notes. Derivative, yes, but delicious. Great for suspending gravity.

By the way, when is “sounding early ’90s” a valid reason to bum on an album – especially considering the vile poppycock currently being pushed onto us as the hot shit? Nice blueblockers, dork. My mom has a pair, too. They look better on her. Goddammit, I hate music blogs besides mine and Swan Fungus. Sorry for the neg vibes. Moving on…

allegories Dream Pop Theater with Allegories and The Asteroid #4

The recently released Surreal Auteur, the debut by Ontario’s Allegories is quite excellent. It helps you remember that time you were floating in the womb. The group lists a prolific queue of artists in their “influences” field that, for once, nails exactly what they sound like (as well as an accurate description of what your record collection should look like if you’re Decibel Tollsin’ around). Sigur Ros (with cherubic chant in tow), Beach Boys, and Grizzly Bear are the obvious comparisons, but there’s also some serious shades of disparate influences like Fennesz and Talk Talk (their post rock period), Maserati and Pentangle, The Books and Cocteau Twins, et cetera. Go peep their MySpazzz, or the empeethrees below, if you’ve been looking to fill out your Windy & Carl and Bark Psychosis collections. Great soundtrack for hang-gliding.

Today’s post was brought to you by the letter A.

Keepin’ It Evil with Loop and Religious Knives

religious_knives Keepin It Evil with Loop and Religious Knives

I’ve been violently cranking Religious Knives as of late. I saw them once with, I think, Wizzardz (a Lightning Bolt side project). Or maybe it was Zodiac Mountain. I don’t remember. Either way, Religious Knives is boss, and reminds me of one of my forgotten favorites – Loop. More on that in a bit. Continue reading ‘Keepin’ It Evil with Loop and Religious Knives’

Deerhunter – Weird Era Cont. Review (In Real Time)

weirderacont Deerhunter - Weird Era Cont. Review (In Real Time)

**For maximum effect, please read the opening paragraph with the inflection of a radio theater narrator circa 1955 or so**

When we last left our heroes, Kenny Bloggins and friends were destroying the paradigm of lame and old hat record reviews with a critique of Microcastle in real-time, before your very eyes. After careful consideration and a positive response from readers, the real-time review is back for another go with Weird Era Cont. Keep your dial locked to this station for keen adventure that can only be described as 23 skidoo! For you listening at home, feel free to follow our friends’ frolic on Last.fm. Deerhunter – Microcastle Review (In Real Time)

microcastle Deerhunter - Microcastle Review (In Real Time)

Inspired by the Deerhunter blog debacle that unfurled before everyone’s eyes in real time last week, I’d like to review the new Deerhunter stereophonic delight Microcastle also in real time. Microcastle is available now on iTunes, and will be realized in the third dimension on October 28, courtesy of the smartest people alive – Kranky Records. Mashin’ play… Continue reading ‘Deerhunter – Microcastle Review (In Real Time)’

Two Classic My Bloody Valentine Shows

Two Classic My Bloody Valentine Shows

As promised earlier this week, here are two classic My Bloody Valentine shows conveniently ZIP archived. These were sent to me by a DT reader and fellow shoegaze ripper. For the sake of comparison, listen to these recordings, then play a track or two from the MBV v2.0 London bootlegs, found here. Virtually no difference, as a “reunion” tour should be (but usually isn’t).

Lookin’ at… lemme see… one month and four days until the Aragon Ballroom in Uptown Chicago is duly leveled. It will be horrible. The National Guard might get called in. Continue reading ‘Two Classic My Bloody Valentine Shows’

New Brian Wilson Streaming Online, New Verve Also Streaming (and Kinda Sucks)

I haven’t heard it yet, since I’m typing this very post from work and the tyrants have firewalled all streaming content, but you probably can (and should) go on and czech the new Brian Wilson jam That Old Lucky Sun from now until Sept. 1 (the day before its release). And, for whatever reason, it’s USA Today that has the jump on this. So go here and let me know how it is. I’ll be right here.

While you’re groovin’ high, I suppose you can also peruse all the hawtttt celebrity gossip USA Today is wont to publish. The article has a nice little timeline available to read so you can get to know B Dubs a little better, though it curiously omits the most fun part of his life – flipping out and building a sandbox around his piano. I hope that That Old Lucky Sun is awesome, but being released to USA Today first doesn’t bode well for its potential awesomeness.

I actually had the pleasure of hearing Brian Wilson speak at a panel during the CMJ Music Marathon 2004 in New York City, right before the Smile sessions were released. He seemed like a nice man. Though he was the keynote speaker that day, he didn’t say much. At all. Whatsoever. Van Dyke Parks did most of the talking, and he would occasionally lean over to Brian and say “isn’t that right, Brian.” “Yes, yes, I remember that. Very fun. Making music. Fun.” It was weird. But it was awesome, too.

Pics or it didn’t happen:

Mogwai meets the 13th Floor Elevators

mogwai Mogwai meets the 13th Floor Elevators

Whereas Mr. Beast was good, but not as remarkable as their earlier efforts, Mogwai is shaping up to release something really special next month if “Batcat” and “Devil Rides” are any indication.

I was totally psyched when I heard that the the mighty Roky Erickson, legendary psychedelic cult hero, was going to appear on the new Mogwai jam hive The Hawk is Howling, already notorious for its most triumphant track listing and flea market-worthy cover art. It’s quite amazing that Roky is not only still alive, but making music today (though most of it is only a shadow of the 13th Floor Elevators’ reach). I mean, how many languages can you say “fuck yeah” in? I can only say it in one, and that’s English, so I will commence into cheering a loud “fuck yeah” for (probably) the most important duet since Michael Jackson and Eddie Murphy’s “Whatzupwitu.” Continue reading ‘Mogwai meets the 13th Floor Elevators’

I’m Sorry, Bradford Cox

deerhunter Im Sorry, Bradford Cox

I’m going to bat for Bradford and pals. Deerhunter has been good to us. On their blog, bandleader Bradford Cox is pretty great about providing new songs and sneak peeks of forthcoming material. While posting a link to the new Atlas Sound single, via Mediafire, Bradford unwittingly provided a public portal to all of his uploaded material, including two not-yet-released albums, unfinished demos, and the famous Deerhunter “micromixes.” In essence, his diary was discovered. As you can imagine, a free-for-all ensued. Old dude made it over to the At Ease Message Boards and posted all the files. Do you think Captain Yorke and the boys would approve of this, brah?! I’m a blogger too and all, but I’m sorry guys, that was a bitch move on your part, indie dorks. For shame. Continue reading ‘I’m Sorry, Bradford Cox’

Shoegazing and Dream Pop Mix 1

null

The Decibel Tolls’ Super Swingin’ Mix is, like, a fuckton of MP3s in a single post focused on a particular genre or theme. The songs sequenced are meant to be listened to, ya know, as a mix. Hence, it’s recommended that you enjoy each song in order without commercial interruption. So you should hit Apple + T (or Ctrl + T for you, egad, PC users) on that shit, throw some D’s on that bitch, and keep the MP3s on this page rockin’ whilst you browse whatever it is you browse on the Internets. Rotate thy volume dial clockwise. Tinnitus for days.

Today, it’s time for the inaugural Shoegazing mix. Considering that shoegazing is generally the second genre I list when discussing this blog, I haven’t posted a lot of shoegazing tracks. I’ve scoured my digital arsenal for a small cross-section of shoegazing from the classic groups and the revivalists, as well offerings from groups who aren’t considered shoegaze proper, but rope in the aesthetic nonetheless. Here’s a healthy collection of wailing, screeching, but melodic canticles of wonder. Continue reading ‘Shoegazing and Dream Pop Mix 1′

My Bloody Valentine Live Sneak Peek (in MP3)

mbv1 My Bloody Valentine Live Sneak Peek (in MP3)

This doesn’t need a long introduction, but as a master of circumlocution, I’m going to give it one. An impressive, soundboard-quality bootleg of one of this summer’s warm-up shows in London has surfaced in torrentland. And it proves everything we’ve been hoping for – My Bloody Valentine will utterly decimate live.

It’s one month and 20 days (according to my righteous little ticker on the left) until My Bloody Valentine inflicts structural damage to the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. And if you’re going to the Chicago date and are worried about the Aragon’s notoriously shitty sound, fear not (probably). Rumor has it that Kevin Shields is bringing his own PA, cables, boards, and everything else he can preside over. I mean, he’s only a producer.

So yeah, for everyone having trouble sitting still until September’s end, this concert bootleg serves as a delicious appetizer. “I Only Said” and “Sueisfine” are majestically aerodynamic live. “Slow” features booty bass and tectonic rumbling. This reunion is epic. Continue reading ‘My Bloody Valentine Live Sneak Peek (in MP3)’
