No need for any commentary here – behold three choice tracks from last weekend’s My Bloody Valentine concert / religious sermon in Chicago. The audio quality is outstanding, so I assume this recording is directly from the soundboard. I plan to have the entire set up soon (probably Monday or Tuesday), so look out for that. That reminds me… yeah, why don’t you subscribe to the Decibel Tolls RSS feed, so you’re the first to know when I unload shipments of awesome on this blog? Sweet sassy molassey! I had no clue that Roky Erickson, 13th Floor Elevators‘ mastermind and D.A.R.E. role model by example, is performing with the Black Angels next week. And I found this out from, get this, a pay-per-click advert on FaCeBoO!klol. My lameness has reached critical mass.
Having just returned from a quick east coast jaunt, Roky got his permission slip signed again and is heading back out, starting October 4th in Dallas and moving westward like the Oregon Trail. The Black Angels will play an opening set for Roky, then serve as his backing band. The two Texas reverb purveyors are also in the studio to work on some old Erickson-penned songs, as well as to collaborate on new material (possibly the follow up to Directions to See a Ghost). I love Roky. I love the Black Angels. I feel total damage for not being able to attend these shows. But let me know how they go – vibes, set list, whatever. Dates after the jump. Awwww, holy fuck buttons. Martin Bulloch, Mogwai’s rhythmic force, was rushed to the hospital shortly after their ATP performance this weekend due to complications from a recent pacemaker surgery. As Mogwai tends to air on the cheeky side of life, the band recently auctioned off Bulloch’s old pacemaker (it has since been removed from eBay). Unfortunately, the new one isn’t working as planned, and was alluded to as the catalyst for Martin’s trip to the hospital. Read more after the jump, or head over to my story at Tiny Mix Tapes. Deerhunter just released some more non-NIN shows coming up this fall. Bradford Cox is buying some new dresses for the occasion, too! By the way, BC has my heart, because he understands something that I understand, but very few others do. Quoted in Analogue Mag: “I’ve pretty much given up on indie rock. I hate indie rock. I never listen to it anymore. Because indie rock to me is safe. Like college rock in the 80s. It has a lot to do with economic oppression. It has a lot to do with rich kids. When I think of indie rock recently I think of sort of bands whose names I won’t mention appropriating African music.” Thank you, Brad. Thank you, Deerhunter. Feathers, rosaries, and teal colored water. Should be a good time, especially on LSD. Brightblack Morning Light’s latest, Motion to Rejoin, takes up where the self-titled record left off, and this time, was recorded with solar power. Brightgreen Morning Light. Matador just announced today that the album drops September 23, the same day as Mogwai’s new record, so the label will be receive approximately $26 of my money on that day. Of course, you can pre-order it now. Continue reading ‘Brightblack Morning Light’s Still Interstellar’

The expansive 1981 Brian Eno + David Byrne LP My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was groundbreaking to the Nth degree, and it’s undoubtedly my favorite release from either gentleman. To think that this unabashedly bizarre album was laid to tape in the middle of Eno’s ambient explorations and right before the ever-popular Remain in Light (all recorded in ’70s no less) is pretty mind-blowing. In many ways, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts made the world safe for artists like Boards of Canada and Godspeed You Black Emperor to utilize strange field recordings over vocals. And it looks like the 2006 rerelease treatment for My Life in the Bush of Ghosts has renewed enough interest for a follow-up collaboration effort. Everything That Happens will be released as a digital download on August 18 from the official site. Throw it on and have the most fucked-up dance party you’ve ever witnessed. Oneida’s latest, Preteen Weaponry, drops today on the pretty much flawless Jagjaguwar label. Preteen Weaponry is part of a sprawling multi-album project dubbed “Thank Your Parents.” What Oneida’s vision exactly is remains rather mysterious, but will rule nonetheless. Preteen Weaponry features three movements, and is the first record in the series. Oneida is always reliably prolific, and most certainly always epic. Though the new jams don’t deviate far from Each One Teach One’s first towering disc, you can’t complain too much with consistent output. Oneida is the greatest non-kraut kraut rock band ever.
