Winks are walking on concrete ground laid out by late 80’s and early 90’s newgaze, pulling up on the tails of bands like Jesus and Mary Chain (they even have a song titled “Stoned and Throned”). They aren’t really presenting anything new here, but they’ve got enough of their own hazy goodness to put that aside for now. The real glory here are the brief periods where the vocals shine through the mix of reverberated guitars and tech drums in a more upfront, almost Jagger-esque, manner. Songs like “Weed Makes Sex Weird” are where they’ve really got a groovy thing going. Their entire self-titled album is up for free download on their bandcamp page.
